Popular Facebook Aplications

There’s a well known statistic that Facebook loves to tout publicly: 50 percent of active Facebook users return to the site daily. It’s an impressive statistic that few application developers have been able to duplicate. Actually, only one application has been able to reach Facebook’s impressive engagement level but many others have come extremely close. As you will see, these applications are indeed the most addictive applications on Facebook.
We’ve gone through the process of determining which Facebook applications are in fact the most engaging applications on Facebook. So how do we determine engagement? Currently we measure engagement as daily active users (DAUs) divided by monthly active users (MAUs). This metric measures what percentage of an application’s total monthly user base returns to the application daily.
I will soon make this metric public and sortable via our
Facebook application statistics tool. For now, you can scan over the 25 applications listed below. I also follow-up at the end of this post with some general thoughts on this metric and what developers can learn from this list.
1. Slots – 52.02%

You may have not played
Slots on Facebook before but around 70,000 people have played and a whopping 52.02 percent of those users return every single day. There are two other games in the leaderboard which are part of this application’s “network”. You can play “Scratch and Win” (3rd most engaging application) and “Pull Tabs” (10th most engaging application), and use the tokens that you’ve won from those applications to bet on slots.
While it may not be the most popular application on Facebook, the developers behind this game are most definitely generating some decent cash flow through repeat users. Also, given that incentive based advertising is the most profitable thing on Facebook, owning a leading gambling application is not a bad position to be in. You can go play the application
here.
2. Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones – 48.9%

It’s not surprising to find a Facebook owned application in this leaderboard considering that 50 percent of active Facebook users return to the site daily. If you have a BlackBerry, there’s a good chance that you’ve already installed this application. Out of the 3.5 million users that have installed the application, 1.7 million are using it daily.
While it’s not surprising to see a Facebook owned application rank so highly, it is somewhat surprising that Blackberry users are the most active mobile Facebook users so far. If you have a Blackberry and read this blog, you probably have already installed the
Facebook for Blackberry application. If you haven’t, I seriously suggest you check it out.
3. Scratch and Win – 47.62%

Proving that gambling is a popular activity on Facebook,
Scratch and Win comes in 3rd with 64,888 out of 136,000 monthly active users returning daily. Scratch applications have been around the Facebook platform since early on.
Backstage, the company behind this application, is sitting on a pretty nice suite of gambling applications. When ranking applications for profitability, I would rank this company up near the top.
Despite having less than half a million monthly active users, a very large portion of their users are returning daily, and that is one of the most important factors when monitizing applications. If you are in to lottery tickets, go
check out the Scratch and Win application.
4. Digsby – 47.3%
Digsby is an extremely popular desktop instant messaging client and was one of the first, if not the first application to integrate Facebook chat. Unlike Meebo, who had their instant messaging support shut down, Digsby has remained functional since their launch. There is one problem with the application that I experienced which was that you would be kicked off of the web version of Facebook as soon as you logged into Digsby.
Regardless, out of the approximately 80,000 users that have taken advantage of the Facebook/Digsby integration, over 32,000 are logging in daily, oftentimes more.
5. Wordscraper – 42.1%

When the Agarwalla brothers had Scrabulous shut down, it was one of the most buzzed about news stories among technology news sources. Today, the brothers still hold some of the most engaging applications on the Facebook platform including
Wordscraper which ranks above both official Scrabble applications. It was a swift shift from Scrabulous to Wordscraper, and the brothers made enough changes to avoid a future law suit.
Now the brothers have the top ranking word games on the platform and they aren’t complaining. While the law suits brought much unnecessary attention to the brothers, the buzz helped attract attention to their new games. While they may have been temporarily knocked down, the brothers are truly masters at developing word games.

Techmeme Hats Me - I crave validation. And Techmeme doesn't deliver it. Techmeme hates me. So I hate Techmeme. Techmeme's dad Gabe is also a member here. [
How to Get on Techmeme]
If this group reaches 4,294,967,296 it might cause an integer overflow - Assuming that Facebook uses unsigned 32-bit integers to represent the size of a group. If so, 2^32 = 4,294,967,296.

Megan Fox
Ever since she graced the screen as the starlet of the blockbuster film "Transformers,"
the Hollywood vixen has attracted a rabid devotion.
On her Facebook page, the actress is short on words, preferring to post sultry magazine covers and video clips.
But those are apparently enough to satisfy the nearly 8.6 million fans who follow her online.
Cristiano Ronaldo
The
Portuguese soccer player is apparently a star on the field and off.
With more than 7 million fans, he's the sixth most popular celebrity on Facebook.
Posting candid comments and pictures from the World Cup events in South Africa, Ronaldo boosted his following and broke into the top 10 list for the first time this year.

current highest value, or with the greatest potential.
1)
Good Samaritan - Good Samaritan is breaking the mold in the Facebook charity application world. Firstly, it has internet offers for products and services at a reduced price, or at a price savings due to getting a service for free for a period of time. Secondly, it has free marketing surveys that users can fill out, costing no more than a few minutes of their time. Every time a user completes an offer or a survey, a donation is made to the participating charity which that user selected! Payouts to charities will range from $.06 - $13.75, and are clearly marked as such next to each offer!(All charities involved can be found at charitynavigator.org)
2)
iRipple - Ripple is a way of donating to a charity without spending any of your own money as well.(based upon their website ripple.org) Using PPC campaigns, it allows users to click on an advertisement, and then donates the proceeds from the advertisement to one of four charities. PPC campaigns have, on average, an extremely small payout. Most PPC campaigns average less than $.25, even as small as $.01 as a payout.(Two of the four charities are not found at charitynavigator.org) However, the application, and the parent website, have a lot of positive feedback from their users!
3)
Good Search - A Yahoo powered search engine which allows them to donate a portion of the proceeds which they earn from searching to the charity that you choose. A major issue with this application is that it boast 45,000 charities & schools, but doesn't clearly disclose exactly how much of the proceeds are donated to these charities. This is a violation of the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance guidelines, which almost any charity knows to avoid. This could potentially mean that the charities involved don't even know that they are involved, or that the application could get those charities in trouble in the long-run.
4)
Social Vibe - An excellent charity application which creates a link between your social network and your
www.socialvibe.com account! Social Vibe utilizes corporate sponsors, who donate money to your chosen charity recipient based upon the number of points that you generate daily on their site. Of course, you utilize their advertisements on your profile which announces that they are sponsoring your charity, so they are achieving some marketing goals from your participation. While the numbers are not clear to me yet as to how much is being donated, I definitely put this application high on the list based upon the credibility of the site and sponsors. I will also update donation information as it becomes available to me.
5)
Charity Trivia - Trivia question charity application which donates 10 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program for each trivia question that you get right. The application seems to be working well, and legitimate with its clarity of its intent. However, some issues with trying to answer multiple questions in a row. The application overall has a good rating, plus a good purpose behind its use - feed the hungry people of the world!
6)
Give Stream - This charity application allows you to choose from 14 different charities, and then donates a portion of proceeds from products that you buy from its Amazon Store. The donation amount is clearly indicated.(however, only two charities listed can be found at charitynavigator.org) The application has an amazing premise behind it, and it just needs a little design improvement.
7)
Every Click - This charity application is also a PPC (Pay Per Click) business model, based out of the UK, which allows you to select a single charity, then they will donate money to that charity each time you use their search engine to search and click on search returns. They make their money from the PPC advertised and sponsored links. This definitely seems legitimate, but again PPC earnings are extremely small per click. The application is designed well, and it is simple to use.
8)
Competition for a Cause - This is a simple charity application that is local to the Twin Cities area. Basically, local business owners are sponsoring an award amount, and users can vote within the application to see which team gets to choose how that award is donated. If you're not from the Twin Cities area, then having your voice heard when it comes time to choose may be difficult... But, it is a good concept!
9)
Pennies at a Time - Here is an oddly configured shopping portal which donates to charities "pennies at a time" whenever you shop through their application. However, there is no clear donation amount, or as to which charities your efforts are benefiting...
10)
New Year's Card - This charity application is an interesting one. You simply make a New Year's wish that you wish to come true in the world... Then, at a time not disclosed, a donation of $100 will be donated for every 1,000 wishes that belong to the charity that is sponsored by the most wishes...
o start:
American Red Cross

The American Red Cross always uses technology to its fullest. Its Facebook page is no different. The landing page displays feeds about disasters, blog posts and Tweets, giving the user a reason to get involved. Scroll further down the page and you’ll find a variety of media, from YouTube videos to Flickr photos. Even though it's only a Facebook Page it could easily be confused with a fully fledged website.
Cancer Research UK

Celebrity endorsements are a great way of inspiring new supporters, but even if you don’t have Gary Lineker on speed-dial, you can still learn from the Cancer Research UK page. The focal point here is a punchy YouTube video, specifically made for the page. Add in the ability to personalise the video, as Cancer Research UK have done, to get people sharing the video and get your page in front of a lot more people. If you have the right content, Facebook excels at this kind of viral promotion.
NSPCC

Engagement is key for charities. What’s the point of millions of people knowing who you are if they don't do anything to help? Using polls on your Facebook fan page is a great little way to get your fans talking to you, to make them think about a cause, and to collect valuable data on your supporters. Add new polls regularly and you may get people visiting your page and interacting just to get the latest results. These polls also show up in voter’s friend’s Facebook feeds, helping spread the word about your page.

Comic Relief: Red Nose Day

Your Facebook fan page needs to be suitable for your charity. You need to know your goals and then tailor your page around them. A great example of a charity doing this comes courtesy of Comic Relief. It’s no secret that Red Nose Day’s main aim is to get donations and its fan page makes this clear. As soon as you visit you're faced with a big red donate button - sometimes getting straight to the point works.
UNICEF
Even though you can do some great things with your Facebook fan page sometimes they just don’t stand up to your own website. So why not turn your page into a portal to your site. This is exactly what UNICEF have done in the multimedia tab of their fan page. Pictures and links to articles on UNICEF’s website are show on Facebook, helping drive traffic to the main website where people are exposed to calls to action for campaigns and donations.
